How To Dress Cute in the Cold: Fashionable Winter Wear

With winter comes cold, damp days, snowfall, and ice. Even just dressing to comfortably go to the store can feel like a challenge. Rest assured, you can still look great in the winter, you just need to modify your approach to getting dressed and fill your closet with the right winter wardrobe. Whether you are getting ready to go on a ski trip or just heading out to go shopping, follow these 6 winter wear tips to look cute even if it's cold.

1. Stylize with a long coat

While it can be tempting to reach for a short, puffy fashionable coat, the outerwear you choose will determine how warm and dry you stay in the winter. Instead of buying a short, light coat, create a look around a longer one. Long coats are far superior at keeping in warm and will prevent most of your body from getting wet. There is no reason to look cute if the clothes you are wearing aren’t functional. Choose a coat that is well-fitting to avoid air gaps and extra baggy fabric. Pick a muted color that will match well with most outfits so you are always set to throw on your coat and feel warm while looking great.

2. Buy well-fitting clothes

Often we equate larger, bulkier clothes with added warmth, but that is not always true. Wearing bulky clothes is a big reason many people don’t feel as fashionable in the winter. After all, it's hard to look fabulous when you’re swimming in your clothes. Invest in well-fitted, high-quality materials that maximize warmth. Some specialized thermal clothing is super warm and ultra-thin. This way you can layer for warmth without adding too much extra bulk.

3. Keep your hair tied up

Winter is hard on hair. The cold, dry air often leaves hair brittle, dry, and splitting. Wind, hats, and hoods can turn your hair into a tangled mess if you aren’t careful and when you go to brush it out, the dryness leads to more breakage. It turns into a vicious cycle. Keeping your hair in a ponytail, bun or other updo of choice prevent knots and damage associated with winter conditions. Even a simple low pony will help keep your hair looking fresh all day and prevent the much-dreaded hat hair.

4. Accessorize to stay warm

Have an arsenal of winter accessories to match your style. Hats, gloves, and scarves can all be added to a look to increase warmth and add a pop of color. Being warm doesn’t mean being boring. Don’t be afraid to stock up on some cute hat and glove options. Be sure to match them with your coat so you have a cohesive look.

5. Dress in layers

The rule of thumb for dressing in winter is to wear three layers. Start with a thin thermal layer, then wear a light jacket, sweatshirt, or sweater, and finally put a waterproof coat over top. It’s not cute to be freezing in the winter, but you also don’t want to be sweating. Dressing in layers means you can take clothes off when you’re hot and put them back on if you get cold, so you can be comfortable regardless of the activity. Try to match each layer you wear so that if you need to take off clothing, your outfit still matches.

6. Wear leggings under dresses and skirts

If you love dresses, believe it or not, you don’t have to ditch them come winter. Be sure to have a pair of thick, high DEN tights of leggings on hand. That way, you can layer under your dress or skirt and stay warm while looking fashionable. Pair your dress/tights combination with some tall, weather-resistant boots for the ultimate winter fashion.
